American businesses continue to commit significant financial resources to legal disputes. According to international law firm Fulbright & Jaworski, 45 percent of U.S. companies spend $1 million or more annually on litigation, excluding the cost of judgments or settlements. A significant proportion of those costs are related to electronic discovery — which involves identifying, producing, filtering and storing data from e-mails, files and databases to be used as evidence in litigation and regulatory compliance matters.

Symantec Enterprise Vault can help relieve this burden. The industry-leading e-mail and content archiving solution automates the migration, storage and retention of unstructured information in accordance with IT policies, while improving performance, reducing costs and simplifying management. Symantec Enterprise Vault controls data loss and ensures all e-mail remains protected and in compliance with corporate policies.

Symantec recently announced the availability of Enterprise Vault 8.0 in conjunction with the 10-year anniversary of Enterprise Vault. Version 8.0 provides customers with a highly efficient intelligent archiving platform with more ways than ever to reduce the costs of storing unstructured information such as e-mail, file server and SharePoint content.

“In all of our research, customers consistently cite the multitude of benefits delivered by archiving, including compliance, more efficient electronic discovery and lower storage costs,” said Brian Babineau, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “In our opinion, customers should not be deciding on whether to implement archiving; rather they should be determining what solution best helps them retain multiple content types, including e-mail, instant messaging and Microsoft SharePoint. With Enterprise Vault 8.0, Symantec continues to innovate on its flexible archiving platform, making it easy for customers to implement and reap the many rewards of a comprehensive archiving strategy.”

Advanced Features

Enterprise Vault has been adopted by more than 10,000 organizations globally. It allows organizations to store, manage and discover content enterprise-wide, and has become the foundation of many organizations’ e-discovery and information management strategies. Enterprise Vault 8.0 continues this tradition by offering significant advancements to storage optimization, usability and e-discovery — saving customers up to 60 percent of the costs of storing unstructured information through its archiving technology.

Enterprise Vault 8.0 offers advanced storage reduction using optimized single-instance storage. The archive keeps just one copy of individual e-mails, their attachments and files, no matter how many times the information occurs and regardless of the originating application.

Leveraging the industry’s first Guided Review feature as part of Enterprise Vault Discovery Accelerator, users are able to analyze and filter search results to quickly drill down to the most relevant content with a few simple mouse clicks, helping to further reduce the costs and risks of e-discovery. A new Getting Started Wizard lets administrators get Enterprise Vault up and running in minutes, and a new Common Tasks Dashboard simplifies administration by providing quick access to common tasks and operations.

“Input from our 10,000-strong customer base helped us see that they were facing more than just e-mail management challenges — they were facing challenges to storing, managing and discovering information from many sources including file systems, instant messaging and SharePoint,” said Simon Jelley, senior director of Symantec Enterprise Vault product management. “With the availability of Enterprise Vault 8.0, customers can achieve complete single-instance storage across all of their unstructured information and significantly reduce their storage and discovery costs."

Leadership Role

Each year, Enterprise Vault is recognized by leading analyst firms for its archiving and e-discovery leadership. Symantec has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the Leaders quadrant of the 2009 Magic Quadrant for E-mail Active Archiving.

“Leaders have the highest combined measures of an ability to execute and a completeness of vision,” according to the Gartner report authored by Carolyn DiCenzo and Kenneth Chin. “They have the most comprehensive and most scalable products. They have a proven track record of financial performance and established market presence. In terms of vision, they are perceived as thought leaders, with well-articulated plans for ease of use, how to address scalability and product breadth. For vendors to have long-term success, they must plan to address the expanded market requirements for archive management, personal store migration, ease of use and deployment, and archive recovery.”

“For the past 10 years the archiving market has continually evolved, but Symantec Enterprise Vault’s reliability and technology advancements remain constant,” said Matt Kixmoeller, vice president of product management, Symantec Information Management Group. “We believe Symantec’s position in the Leaders quadrant by Gartner validates our long-standing dedication to delivering an innovative solution that allows customers to manage and discover unstructured data with ease and confidence.”
